More Concerns About Nairn Academy
From a concerned parent:
The recent HMIe report on Nairn Academy provided some positive reading.
But it is regrettable that there has been no public comment thus far on the failures in the English Department.
Surely this is a matter that our elected members, who have offered no public comment on this matter so far, must now address. The HMIe report about the school which can be viewed online states:
“In English, many young people’s learning needs are not well met and overall attainment is unsatisfactory”.
If highly paid officials and our elected members are unwilling to accept their responsibilities and take action to address this wholly unacceptable situation and parents are unwilling to have their voices heard, we are all guilty of failing the children going through the educational system.
“Unsatisfactory” by the HMIe criteria means there are ‘major weaknesses’ in the department. If you are concerned about this state of affairs at the school it’s time to make your views known in the strongest possible terms.

This blog is entitled Nairn Matters. Surely our children matter. This department has been failing for years. The Press & Journal recently revealed failings in the English Dept. at Lossiemouth High School. It’s a great pity they didn’t expose the failings at Nairn. Highland Council has known about the problems in this department at Nairn for years and it is clear from this latest report they have have done nothing about it.
I personally believe that the English department at the academy is great. Infact having attended the school for 5 years now, I have to say it is my favourite subject and also my strongest. So whilst the report has shown the department in a negative light, it is not that bad, this is coming from a pupil and I’m simply expressing my view seeing as you want everyone’s views. I think the English staff are very enthusiastic about their work and want the best for their pupils. Pupils not getting the ‘right’ grades is not necessarily the fault of the teachers, the pupils too have to take some sort of responsibility. Through my experience in the English department, my teachers have always been willing and on hand to help me, if help was needed, so possibly not enough pupils are taking up these opportunities that are available to them. And obviously some pupils don’t want to learn and the teachers do the best they can with them but if there is not that sense of motivation, then what chance have the teachers got? Altogether I believe the English department rocks!!
….sorry if that was a bit too long, just felt the need to express myself (another thing I have learnt through English classes!).
